Who am I?

Who am I?
My name is Josine de Boer and I live in Scotland, U.K.
I have been studying video art in the Netherlands between 1996 and 2000. I finished my study with a Bacholor degree in fine arts at the University AKI Enschede in the Netherlands. In 2006 I moved to Scotland. After settling down, I picked up video art again.

What are my themes?

In video art I like to look at unusual things in real life. Every minute of our lives there's movement around us. It can be everything; from my writing hand to shadows on the wall or ripples in the water. These are the things I like to record and show to the people. All of my work is based on personal events, but because they are such an ordinary happening everybody can recognize it. That said, if they can look through the distortion. Some of my work is so distorted that it is hard to recognize the original recording.

In photography I use more or less the same theme. Although I don't alter the picture; it should be right at once. Nature is perhaps the most important theme in my photographs. If you look very close at flowers, they sometimes almost look alien. And that's what I look for to make a photograph. Some of my photographs have been used for websites for B&B's.

What is video art?

Video art is all about movement and/or sound. It's different from film because there are no restrictions or rules for video art, often there is no plot or narrative. There are two varieties of video art: single-channel and installation. Single-channel is the video on its own, either on screen or projected. "Confusion", "Bedroom memories", "Effervescent" and the theatre Luijck backgrounds are all single-channel. Video-installation combines video with solid features or several monitors. "Peeping Tom" and "His bark is worse than his bite" are video-installations.
